Bichon Frise - Quistel Dogs

A Bichon Frise is a popular small breed of dog that is very similar in appearance (but larger) than the Maltese.  It is also known as a 'Bichon a poil frise' and a 'Bichon Tenerife'.

The Bichon Frise is small dog with a medium to high intelligence, that weighs roughly 5-10kg and stands at around 23-30cm at the withers, although its not unusual to see slightly larger dogs.  They have rounded skull and muzzle, with a long groomed tail that is curly and carries over the back.  Their nose is black and they have rounded dark eyes with a dense curly, usually white coat, quite similar to that of a poodle, although many of the breed have hair that is less curly.  Coat colours are usually white, but apricot and grey are not uncommon and most dogs have patches of a cream or apricot colour around their ears, snout, paws or body.  The head and legs are proportionate in size to the body, with natural (not docked or clipped) ears and tail.

Their known for being a merry and cheerful breed with gentle manners and can be very playful and affectionate.  They love human company and are generally very sociable, they also do very well with children and other pets.

The Bichon Frise is descended from the Water Spaniel or Barbet and the Standard Poodle.  The word Bichon comes from Middle French and means 'small long haired dog', its also a diminutive of the Old French word 'biche' which means 'bitch, female dog'.

The Bichons were divided into four categories, and all originated from the mediterranean area.  Because of their merry disposition they were a popular companion dog and were often used as barter by sailors as they moved from continent to continent.  Its generally believed that Spanish seamen introduced the breed to the Canary Islands, they were also popular with Italian sailors in the 14th century and became a favourite of italian nobility.  Though not considered a retriever or water dog, the Bichon was a very popular sailor's dog, and they do have an affinity for water and enjoy retrieving.
